The End Triassic extinction event was caused by unprecedented high CO2-emmission rates resulting from CAMP volcanism (Central Atlantic Magmatic Province) associated with the opening of the Central Atlantic Ocean. Siliceous sponge meadows established as alternate ecosystem subsequent to the ecological crisis. This project investigates the role of siliceous sponges and weathering in this time interval using Si isotopes in cherts and sponge spicules preserved in carbonates. We are looking for a highly motived person with a university Master’s degree in Geosciences with a geochemical thesis. We particularly encourage applicants who are enthusiastic about lab work and mass spectrometry. Relevant skills for this position include experience in Multicollector-ICP-MS, especially silicon isotope analysis, laser ablation analysis and work in a clean lab. The ability to work in the field for short sampling campaigns and background on silica diagenesis are beneficial. A good sense of responsibility, good communication skills and good oral and written language skills in English are required. The position offers the possibility to write a dissertation. You will predominantly work in the clean-room laboratory for sample preparation and ion chromatography as well as using state-of-the-art mass spectrometers (MC-ICP-MS, TIMS, ICP-MS, ICP-OES) and you will use various optical methods for sample characterization.
