The University Hospital Ulm and its employees stand for a modern and high quality patient care, excellent university research and medical education focused on the future as well as apprenticeships in attractive professional fields. The requirements for this are qualified and committed employees.

Institute:

The overall goal of the research activities at the Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics (www.biomechanics.de) is to better understand the aetiology of disorders of the musculoskeletal system with a view to develop novel therapeutic strategies. The Institute is embedded in the Trauma Research Centre Ulm (ZTF) and the Collaborative Research Centre 1149 (CRC1149) "Danger response, disturbance factors and regeneration after acute trauma". We rely on a broad spectrum of innovative methods, an interdisciplinary research approach, and extensive local, national and international cooperation to perform high quality research. The excellent scientific environment and the open-minded atmosphere within the institute guarantees ideal working conditions.

Project description:

We offer a PhD project dealing with compromised bone regeneration after fracture. Poorly healing bone fractures are a major clinical problem but the reasons are still poorly understood. Particularly patients with concomitant disorders ( e.g. osteoporosis, inflammatory diseases) are on a high risk for fracture healing complications. The PhD project will focus on the cellular and molecular mechanims and the capacity of mesenchymal stem cells to improve healing. The spectrum of methods comprises mouse models, cell culture work as well as molecular biology, (immune) histology and imaging techniques. The PhD student has the opportunity to join the International Graduate School of Molecular Medicine Ulm (IGradU).

Start of the project: December 2024, duration: 3 years

Candidates:

We are seeking for excellent candidates (M.Sc. in biology, molecular medicine, biochemistry etc.) with a strong motivation to address biological and medical questions with interdisciplinary approaches. Experience in immunology and molecular biology are advantageous.

We offer:

The opportunity to work in a dynamic and highly motivated team. Salary and benefits are given according to the German TV-L system. We offer a workplace health promotion, numerous training and continuing education opportunities and also support concerning the compatibility of job and family.
